1. Uses (Therapeutic Indications)

Laxoberon® is indicated for the relief of constipation.
It acts as a stimulant or contact laxative, gently stimulating the muscles of the large intestine to produce predictable, overnight bowel movements and help restore the body’s natural rhythm.

2. Side / Adverse Effects

Abdominal discomfort or distention

Abdominal pain and cramps

Borborygmus (intestinal gurgling sounds)

Nausea and vomiting

Diarrhea

In cases of overdose or chronic use: dehydration, electrolyte imbalance (especially hypokalemia), muscle weakness, renal calculi, metabolic alkalosis, and secondary hyperaldosteronism

Rarely, colonic mucosal ischemia with very high doses

3. Contraindications and Warnings / Precautions

Contraindications

Do not use in:

Ileus or intestinal obstruction

Acute surgical abdominal conditions (e.g., appendicitis)

Acute inflammatory bowel diseases

Severe dehydration

Hypersensitivity to Sodium Picosulfate or formulation components

Patients with hereditary fructose intolerance


Special Warnings and Precautions

Not for long-term or continuous daily use without medical supervision

Chronic or excessive use may cause electrolyte imbalance and rebound constipation

Investigate persistent constipation before prolonged use

Not recommended for children under 10 years without medical advice

Use with caution in elderly and debilitated patients


Drug Interactions

Diuretics and Corticosteroids: may increase risk of electrolyte imbalance

Broad-spectrum antibiotics: may reduce laxative effect


Special Populations

Pregnancy: No known harmful effects, but avoid especially during first trimester unless benefits outweigh risks

Lactation: Use not recommended due to insufficient safety data

4. Dosage and Administration

Tablets: Adults — 1 to 2 tablets at night.
Liquid (Oral Solution):

Adults and children over 10 years: 5–10 mg (1–2 teaspoonfuls) at night

Children 4–10 years: 2.5–5 mg (½–1 teaspoonful) at night

Children under 4 years: 250 micrograms per kg body weight
Once bowel regularity is restored, reduce dose and discontinue gradually.

5. Pharmacology

Mechanism of Action:
Sodium Picosulfate is a locally acting stimulant laxative. After bacterial cleavage in the colon, it stimulates intestinal mucosa, enhancing peristalsis and rectal motility.

Pharmacokinetics:

Minimally absorbed systemically

Activated in the colon by bacterial enzymes

Onset of action: 6–12 hours

Low systemic exposure and urinary excretion

6. Overdosage

Symptoms:
Severe diarrhea, abdominal cramps, electrolyte loss (especially potassium), dehydration, possible colonic ischemia.

Management:

Induce vomiting or perform gastric lavage if early

Replace fluids and correct electrolytes

Antispasmodics may relieve symptoms
