Homing Sensors & Work Offsets, Do You Need Them (CNC Routers)

Whether you’re working with CNC routers or any other CNC machine, and wondering what are homing switches/sensors and work offsets are, this video explains what they are and how they work. You will also be able to determine if you want to add them to your CNC router. In this video, we are talking about the Longmill CNC router but it applies to all CNC machines

Homing Switches/Sensors: These are sensors used when you want to have an established known position on your machine at all times. When a machine is ‘homed’, it will move to a corner. When the 3 or more axis of the machine triggers the sensor, the CNC machine control sets this point as ‘machine home’. This creates a known location where all work is created from. And where work offsets will be referenced.

Work offsets are locations around the CNC work area that can be repeatedly called up using gcode commands G54, G55, G56, G57, G58 & G59. These gcodes are ‘work offset’ gcodes and are inserted in the beginning of the gcode so the machine knows the point bein referenced

Work offsets are excellent to use for seamless transitions between multiple parts or jobs. Especially when you are using multiple jigs or fixtures for multiple projects.

The other benefit is in the even of a power loss to the machine, the original work start point can easily be recovered because it always starts from the same position relative to the machine's home.

Do You Need Homing Switches? Not all CNC routers, or other types of CNC machines come with homing switches. But they can be added. For hobby work and one-off jobs, homing sensors and work offsets are not needed unless you want security to find the start point in the event of a power failure.

If you are starting a CNC business and expect to run multiple different projects, then homing sensors are necessary.
