On the 16th of October 1990, the IRA killed 24 year old Stephen Craig in the car park of the Chester Park Hotel on the Antrim Road in North Belfast. He was a former reserve policeman, having left the RUC 6 months prior to his death. He had previously been threatened by the IRA.

He was killed in an elaborate ploy in which an an IRA asset went out drinking with him in the city centre. This man had been threatened by the IRA over a financial dispute and had been warned if he could not get information on policemen he would be kneecapped.

The pair then got a taxi to the North Belfast hotel where the asset contacted the IRA. On the pretext of getting a taxi home, he was lured outside where a car pulled up and IRA gunmen opened fire, killing Stephen Craig.

Within an hour of the shooting, the UDA/UFF shot dead 41 year old Dermot McGuinness on Rosapenna Street. The attack happened so quickly after the shooting of the policeman that it is likely the killing was random and not a direct 'retaliation'. He had just bought a bottle of wine from an off-licence and was returning to his home on the street. UDA gunmen apparently tried to kidnap him; when he resisted, he was pushed to the ground and shot 6 times. The killing was apparently carried out by notorious loyalist gunman Stephen McKeag. The following month, the victim's friend and work colleague Raymond Robinson was shot dead by the UVF on the same street in another sectarian murder.
