ProRes RAW: How to record, edit, and transcode with Final Cut Pro, Premiere, Scratch & Resolve

ProRes RAW is a great codec, but it still has a ways to go. It can be a challenge to monitor exposure with recorders like the Atomos Ninja V. Once you figure that out you need to decide how you are going to edit it. Final Cut Pro 10 has the best support for editing, but it’s only available on OS X and isn’t my NLE of choice. Premiere Pro supports it, but lacks the common ISO and white balance controls that we all want with a raw codec. Scratch has perhaps the best support and is also a good transcode tool, but is probably foreign to most people and has a learning curve.

I love Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve, but it doesn’t support ProRes RAW at all. If you can wade through the hassles of transcoding ProRes RAW, you can get great results. Is it worth the effort? Maybe you’ll want to drop it all and just buy a RED KOMODO. 😏
