The first time I had to use the spare tire in this truck it was raining, and I had the tailgate down with the bed full. I knew basically how to lower the tire, but I kept sticking the small end of the shaft in and couldn't get it to hook up with the drive to lower the tire. I ended up taking everything out of the bed of my truck and closing the tailgate (not necessary) before I realized the key is to take the hook off, and use the big end to turn the tire winch. Hopefully this can help avoid a similar hassle.
