Chalbi Desert Ultra - The worlds toughest race in Africa

The Chalbi Desert Ultra (CDU) is a 100km endurance race set in the Northern desert of Kenya. The run is designed to be the ultimate running challenge in Kenya. The inaugural event will be on 11th November 2023 at Kalacha Marsabit. Participants will set out to run 15km, 30km, 50km, and 100km routes in the harsh desert terrain.

The Cause: Rehabilitation of Kalacha Irrigation Project
The Kalacha Irrigation Project was birthed in 1984. The scheme began with only 20 acres but has now expanded to more than 200. The scheme was focused on growing vegetables but local farmers moved away to planting fodder for animals due to pests and interference by wild animals (monkeys and baboons). The project bolstered farmers’ spirits at a time when they were giving up due to drought. The project is now run by a local sub-committee and has been successful in supply of Hay to nearby

communities. Over the last 5 years, failed
rainfall has proved harder for these communities and there is a need to widen the scope of the scheme to cover food production.

There are opportunities to bolster the fodder production as well as diversify into fruit and vegetable production. This event seeks to highlight and support this cause. Interventions will range from physical infrastructure as well as capacity building of the community towards this goal.
