Nepal’s prime minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned as anti-corruption protests across the country escalated on Tuesday.

Though the protests were triggered by the social media ban, there has been widespread frustration with the government over the perceived lack of action to tackle corruption. Thousands took to the streets on Tuesday, even as a curfew was put in place after 19 people were killed in clashes between police and protesters on Monday. At least two more people were killed on Tuesday.

Oli took over as Prime Minister in July 2024, his fourth time in office, with the backing of the Nepali Congress Party.

The unrest is the worst in decades for the Himalayan nation.
