Dear 21-year-old Liana,

As the sun sets on your last night of being a child
and rises into the first day as an adult,
I have to reflect on how I’ve made it. Everything seems unreal.
The past year took more turns than expected.
The promises and secured celebrations for your last year in highschool were swept away.
And you were left with time to create, opportunity to grow, and yearning to hug your friends.
I hope you take time to always hug your friends.
Not much has changed in the US since March, Friday the 13th, the last unofficial day of school.
But you’re going to try to celebrate your birthday regardless and smile.
21 will mean you’re probably going into your senior year of college.
Charlottesville has held me here long enough.
I wonder how many friends you’ve made & lost along the way,
where you’re living in Richmond,
how alive the city is these days.
Where will you go next after this adventure?
Creating is in your blood.
It is on your walls,
in the letters you write,
in your overflowing collection of journals.
It never pauses to let you breathe, even the pattern of in and out can spur songs, poems, paintings.
I hope you keep your passions, that your love for making others smile through art never changes.
You are a storyteller through
words,
songs,
hands,
blank pieces of nothings that can turn into somethings.
You hold unconditional love
that springs like weeds.
There are so many people in your life you treasure and cup their cheeks with affection.
But, there are two people in your life you hold in your locket close to your heart,
next to your cat,
that you love greater than the length of pi.
The first is your best friend.
No other term can describe her more perfectly.
We have watched each other grow from children to adults.
She has stuck to my side like wet and dry ingredients in a cake.
A glowing beam of light.
That is Reagan.
The second is harder to describe.
An old friend from past lives, the pieces of stardust I had lost along the way.
We are a tree that has sprouted two trunks.
That is Charlotte.
Hold them close, never let them go.
I wouldn’t forgive you if you did.
Despite the circumstances, you are happier these days, more optimistic than ever.
You are okay most days.
And that’s what matters.
I hope you have a lovely birthday with hugs and love and ice cream cake.
And I hope that when the sun sets on your last night before turning 21,
you reflect on how much further you’ve made it.
I know we’ll be far along.
