Voltaren Gel is also known by the generic name: diclofenac
Voltaren Gel comes in a 1% topical transdermal gel.
Voltaren Gel is most commonly used for treating arthritis and can be used to ease pain and swelling. If may also be used for other reasons, contact your doctor. No matter what your doctor has you using Voltaren Gel for, it is always applied to the skin. It comes with a dosing card that you need to be sure you know how to use, ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. After rubbing it in, let sit for at least 10 minutes before you cover the area with clothes or gloves. Do not bathe, shower, or swim for 1 hour after putting on.
If you miss a dose of Voltaren Gel:
• Put on a missed dose as soon as you think about it
• If it is close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time
• Do not put on 2 doses or extra doses

The best way to store Voltaren Gel:
• Store at room temperature.
• Protect from light.
• Store in a dry place. Do not store in a bathroom or refrigerator.
• Keep all drugs in a safe place. Keep all drugs out of the reach of children and pets.
• Check with your pharmacist about how to throw out unused drugs.

Usual doses of Voltaren Gel range from 2 grams to 4 grams up to 4 times daily.

Some common side effects with Voltaren Gel include itching and application site rash.

Some less common side effects include chest pain, headache, diarrhea, and stomach pain.

Do not use Voltaren gel if you:
• Have a history of asthma, urticarial, or other type of allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
• Are having a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery

Voltaren Gel comes with the black box warnings of:
• Serious cardiovascular thrombotic events
o NSAIDs cause an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, including myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke, which can be fatal
o Diclofenac is contraindicated in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
• Serious gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, and perforation
o NSAIDs cause an increased risk of serious gastrointestinal adverse reactions, including bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, which can be fatal.
o These reactions can occur at any time during use and without warning symptoms. Elderly patients and patients with a prior history of peptic ulcer disease and/or GI bleeding are at greater risk of serious GI events.

When using Voltaren Gel, remember it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have:
• Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever
• Chest pain or pressure
• Shortness of breath, a big weight gain, swelling in the arms or legs
• Weakness on 1 side of the body, trouble speaking or thinking, change in balance, drooping on one side of the face, or blurred vision
