Researchers at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi have found traces of fentanyl and other pharmaceuticals in bottlenose dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico. Of the 89 dolphins studied, 30 tested positive for drug contaminants, with all six dead dolphins showing traces of fentanyl. Scientists believe the drugs may enter the marine food chain through wastewater or trafficked substances. The discovery raises concerns about marine ecosystem health and potential impacts on the human food supply.
