A historic submarine is ready for some much-needed maintenance in Sturgeon Bay.

The USS Cobia left its dock at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc on Sunday morning, Sept, 7, 2025.

It was originally scheduled to move on Thursday, but was rescheduled due to weather delays.

The WWII-era submarine will be towed 55 nautical miles north to Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay.

There it will be cleaned, inspected, replated, and repainted in dry dock.

Many gathered at the shoreline to watch the famous submarine leave the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. Beginning at 7 a.m., crews readied the sub for departure with two tugboats attached.

Around 8 a.m., the USS Cobia left the dock and headed north up Lake Michigan to Sturgeon Bay.

The maintenance is thanks to Project Dry Dock 2025.

It should last about six weeks.
