Rimsky-Korsakov: Variations for oboe in g minor on a Theme by Glinka "Chto krasotka molodaya" (1878), arr. Engelbert Exl • Pauline Oostenrijk (oboist) • "Amor Musae" Symphonic Wind Band • Hilco Elshout (conductor) • 20 November 2021 ("The Soul of Russia")

In 1878 Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov composed his "Variations in g minor for oboe and wind orchestra on a theme by Michail Glinka 'Chto krasotka molodaya'". This concertante, the second of a total of three concertantes, was originally written for the Russian Marine Band and is a set of twelve variations on the melody of Michail Glinka's song "Why Do You Cry, Young Beauty?". It was premiered in March 1878 with Rimsky-Korsakov conducting the Russian Marine Band and Ranishevsky as solo oboist.
In his autobiography "Chronicle of My Musical Life", Rimsky-Korsakov wrote about this work: "[The three compositions for solo instrument and wind orchestra] were written, firstly, with the goal of providing concert solo works for instruments not often afforded such roles, and secondly, for me to master the virtuosic concerto/concertante compositional style, with its solo, tutti, cadenzas, etc."
