What Could Have Been: COTY Postscript. The refreshed 2014 Ford Fiesta was both a surprise and a disappointment at our 2014 Car of the Year competition. The surprise was simple: the Fiesta ST was without a doubt one of the most exciting cars at Car of the Year. There was arguably no car as exciting around the winding track than the pint-sized screamer. The disappointment was equally simple: despite our request, Ford only sent us a single Fiesta -- the ST -- meaning we didn't get a chance to sample the base 1.6-liter I-4, the 45-mpg 1.0-liter turbo I-3, or the sedan body style. You generally can't win an award like Car of the Year based on the merits of a single trim level. Ford recently sent us a variety of Fiestas, including a volume 2014 Ford Fiesta SE sedan automatic, and with that we went to work to try and find out if the Golden Calipers were within the Blue Oval's reach. In order to be named Car of the Year, a car has got to ace our six criteria: Advancement in Design, Efficiency, Safety, Value, and Performance of Intended Function. Though the Fiesta comes in quite a variety of shapes and sizes, our focus will be on a volume Fiesta SE sedan, equipped with the naturally aspirated 1.4-liter I-4 and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
