Why Charly Quivront Says His Bobby Quad is the Best Quad Ever

French surfer Charly Quivront says the Bobby Quad is his favorite all-around board. And the best quad he's ever had. Despite being designed for summer's small waves in Bobby's Santa Barbara backyard, Charly was quite surprised by it, learning that it has a crazy range of performance. This edit demonstrates that pound for pound there is no better short rail quad out there right now.

Here is what Charly has to say about the Bobby Quad: "As you can see in the edit, I love how well it keeps speed and flow through the dead parts of the waves. Due to the boards short rail, in my case being a 5’3, it’s so easy to place the board in the critical part of the wave, even when only thigh high. I kind of expected it to be good in small surf because that's what Bobby made it for, and it was really great. What was the big surprise was that I learned it's also amazing in the barrel, holding so well. Pretty impressive how good this board can go in bigger waves but it’s the smallest board I’ve ever had."

Charly continues: "I didn't really order this board, CI said I should try it and that it was fun. Just handed it to me. It's not something I'd ever consider because I never ride boards smaller than 5’9, so that was instantly the smallest board of my quiver, and of my life really. So I thought I was gonna bring it to Hawaii, maybe ride a few times really small days. I ended up riding it for 10 days straight at Rocky Point in any condition, and that’s were I fell in love with the design. It's amazing how something so unexpected like this can become so pivotal in your life and that's why I began riding it on surf trips like this one to Indo."

Charly's takeaway: "Bobby Quad has to be the best quad out there. It has that fun look and that weird tail, but it delivers: It's fast in all part of the wave and it turns in 1ft to 6ft like a knife through butter! Plus, it's so small it fits perfectly in the bag for any trip anywhere."

More info about the Bobby Quad: Bobby Martinez challenged CI to build him as short of a board as possible with the goal of maximizing his fun in Santa Barbara’s tiny summer surf. He also added that it had to be a quad, and it still had to live up to his high-performance standards. Bobby’s shortboards are 5’8” but for this customized four-finner he was thinking we ought to take it down to 5’2”. By shortening the rail line and distributing the volume into the width throughout the plan shape he’d be able to skate over the flats and carry enough speed to still fit in his signature gauges.

The Bobby Quad has a low entry rocker that goes into a flat planing surface under the gas pedal portion of the board that provides the speed to get into waves and over those flat sections. The exit rocker and bottom contours are designed to be all business - with performance oriented flip and generous double concave for added lift to help Bobby boogie down the line in gutless waves. Its tail rocker profile, combined with some width in the tail and modified swallow, provide speed and hold during quick directional changes.

The model is designed to be ridden 3” to 6” shorter and ¼” to 1/2” wider than your shortboard. For reference, Bobby’s dimensions are 5’2 x 19 x 2 5/16. From other team riders we’ve since learned that the Bobby Quad is versatile enough to be scaled up for those wanting to increase their wave count. The rail stays nicely foiled (not chunky) at fuller dimensions, so to maintain the integrity of the design we recommend adding thickness over width to hit your volume. As for fins, we recommend you run your favorite quad templates.
