Akae Beka’s inimitable style developed over decades of performing with the St. Croix-based band Midnite. By the time of his untimely passing in 2019, he had released over 70 LPs. His prolific output, coupled with uniquely rich, deep, multilayered songwriting and uncompromising devotion to RasTafari, has earned him a place among the reggae legends. The production trinity, Zion I Kings, has been involved collectively and individually in co-creating some of the most highly regarded contributions to the vast Akae Beka catalog.

Kibir La Amlak is a RasTafari roots reggae music producer, selector, sound engineer, and record label manager. The ‘Live Dub Experience’ is a captivating journey through his discography, reinterpreted live with spiritual depth and hypnotic allure. Dynamic tempos, styles, and on-the-spot dub experimentation seamlessly blend decades of studio experience with decades of sound system touring.

Born out of the UK reggae sound system scene, Before Zero Records stands as a testament to a tradition that has shaped global musical and cultural landscapes. Reggae music, reggae sound systems, and the RasTafari faith have contributed some of the world’s most treasured cultural assets, recognized for their spiritual, socio-political, and cultural significance. Before Zero Records celebrates and continues the legacy of the UK reggae sound system culture—a bass-heavy, bass-driven movement rich in spiritual depth and socio-political commentary.

The 7” featured in this mix are from the Before Zero Records x I Grade ‘Akae Beka - Word, Sound and Power, Vocal and Version Series.’ This series honors both the vocal and version culture of the reggae sound system and the profound lyricism of Vaughn Benjamin. Before Zero Records worked with Tippy I Grade to mix a series of dub mixes from a carefully curated selection of his extensive works with Vaughn Benjamin. The vocal and corresponding dub mixes were then cut to wax by Lewis Hopkin of Star Delta and wrapped in a collage made of Ras Marcus’s artworks, crafted for various LP covers of Vaughn’s works throughout the years, with the lyrics transcribed and printed on the rear of each sleeve.
