Why do we revere someone admitted to Yale, Oxford, or Cambridge as a paragon of intellect and achievement, yet look down on the person who devotes his life to religious scholarship as if he were backward?

This attitude is itself a legacy of Western colonization. The supposed divide between “worldly” and “religious” education never existed in the Islamic tradition. Colonial powers imposed their own schooling to keep subject nations tethered to their ideology. Sadly, we have failed to recognize the flawed metaphysics underlying that system. Minor adjustments cannot fix it; what’s needed is a thorough reform rooted in the principles of Islamic learning.
