Biochar is a stable, carbon-rich material produced by heating organic biomass in the absence of oxygen through a process called pyrolysis. It is used as a soil amendment and offers numerous benefits for small-scale food production. Biochar improves soil fertility by enhancing nutrient retention and promoting beneficial microbial activity, leading to increased crop yields. It also improves soil structure, increases water retention, and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, making it an eco-friendly option. Furthermore, biochar sequesters carbon, helping mitigate climate change by capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide in the soil for extended periods.
