After the Visigothic collapse in 711, a refuge in the Cantabrian mountains lit the flame of resistance: the Kingdom of Asturias. Born with Pelagius and the symbolic victory of Covadonga, it survived internal struggles and wars against Islam. Alfonso II gave it a Neo-Gothic identity, made Oviedo the capital, and legitimized it with the discovery of the tomb of Saint James, which attracted European Christendom. With Alfonso III, it reached its peak, expanding and repopulating the Douro valley. In 910, when it moved to León, the kingdom evolved and laid the roots of Spain and Portugal.
