Baaba Maal, from Senegal, one of our time's ambassadors for humanity, on the main stage at WOMAD, Charlton Park Saturday 30th July 2011.

"Baayo" means orphan.
I read that Baaba Maal wrote this song after the death of his mother, and sang it as a celebration of his parents.


In Zimbabwe there are many orphans. The highest population of orphans in the world, per capita. Many of these children make their way south across the border - nobody knows how many. Many are hurt, some are killed. Some are luckier and find refuge and some education, but many are just living on the streets. They are all frightened. And they just want to go to school.
There are orphanages in Zimbabwe struggling to help the children there.
