Why C major?... Richard Wright...
Two factors determine the choice of keys used in this edition. First, which offers the most resonance and ease of playing? Second, there is a realistic choice, which is lowest in pitch? It helps to rememer that these miracles of implied polyphony were written for a bass instrument and one with far less aptitude for part playing and self harmonisation than the guitar. The music was therefore designed to work with a minimum of lower voice support. The lower the key, the richer and more cello like the result; the temptation to add lower voices for the sake of strengthening the overall sound is more easily resisted and the better we understand the music for what it is.
