World war 2 was a time of immense suffering and destruction, but some of it's darkest days came in August 1945. The world witnessed the first and only use of nuclear weapons in war when the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

On August 6, 1945, a bomber plane named Ebola Gay released a bomb called "Little Boy" over Hiroshima. The explosion was devastating. Within seconds, much of the city was destroyed. Buildings were flattened, and tens of thousands of people were killed instantly. Those who survived faced severe burns, radiation sickness, and long twrm health problems.

Three days later , on August 9, 1945, another bomb called "Fat Man" was dropped on Nagasaki. Although the terrain of the city lessened some of the damage, the impact was still catastrophic. Tens of thousands more lives were lost, and the survivors, known as hibakusha, lived with physical and emotional scars for the rest of their lives.

These Bombs forced Japan to surrender on August 15, 1945, bringing World war ll to an end.
