Parts of the United Kingdom faced severe flooding and chaos on New Year's Day as torrential rain battered north-west England, leading to more than 100 flood warnings. Greater Manchester was among the worst-hit areas, with flooding reported in Bolton, Didsbury, Stockport, Harpurhey, and Wigan. Residents in Meadow Mill, Stockport, faced extreme conditions, with around 400 people trapped in flats without electricity or running water.
