13 December 1880 marked the beginning of the Anglo-Boer War 1, also known as the Transvaal War of Independence. 3 years Prior, the British had annexed the Transvaal, which led to a period of passive resistance by the Boer population. However, their attempts to reverse the annexation were unsuccessful. In response, a gathering of approximately 8,000 to 10,000 Boers took place at Paardekraal on 8 December 1880. They elected a triumvirate of leaders and resolved to restore the Transvaal Republic. Three days later, on 13 December, they raised their Vierkleur flag at Heidelberg, symbolically rejecting British authority. This pivotal event marked the end of passive resistance and set the stage for a protracted conflict between the British and the Boers.
