New Zealanders embraced easing coronavirus restrictions among them, a mayor who celebrated the end of a seven-week lockdown by bungy jumping off a bridge, expressing hope that tourism would return to the area.

Businesses including malls, cinemas, cafes and gyms were all allowed to re-open on Thursday after the country downgraded some of the tightest measures in the world to a "level two."

That allowed Hans Winkler, from Switzerland, and his new bride, Holly Boud, from England, to tie the knot, two days after they had originally wanted to get married.

People began queuing for haircuts outside their local barber shop, some with a beer in hand, ready for the doors to open.

Others sat down for a coffee in a café and children returned to playgrounds.

Businesses will be required to have physical distancing and strict hygiene measures in place.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern placed the Pacific nation in lockdown for more than a month under "level four" restrictions that were eased by a notch late last month. It has continued to enforce strict social measures on many of its citizens and businesses, helping prevent widespread community spread of the virus.
