Agha is sin. Unhappiness occurs because of past sins.
An-agha is free of sin. This Vrata destroys the sins committed by body, mind, and speech, thus freeing us of the burden of having to experience the bad consequences of our sins committed knowingly or unknowingly.
Dattatreya Swami, also called Anagha Swami, is of the aspect of Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva, but the predominant feature is of Vishnu, the preserver and protector. Anagha Swami’s consort Anagha Devi, is Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Parvati, all in one. Her predominant aspect is of Lakshmi. She represents Anagha Swami’s power of Yoga. The Ashtha Siddhis are represented as their 8 sons. Together as a family we worship them in this Vratam.
The Ashta Siddhis are:
1) Anima - subtle as an atom. By this worship, the practitioner becomes subtle and be anywhere.
2) Laghima - With this siddhi, the practitioner becomes weightless.
3) Prapti - Through this siddhi, the practitioner can gain almost anything.
4) Prakamya - Through this siddhi, the practitioner can achieve any desired goal.
5) Isitva - Through this siddhi, the practitioner can command the universe.
6) Vasitva - With this siddhi, the practitioner can take control of himself and control all.
7) Kamavaasayita - Through this siddhi, the practitioner can achieve anything.
8) Mahima - With this siddhi, the practitioner can grow as he wishes.
This kamadhenu-like kalpavriksha, the Anaghashtami Vrata is claimed to be greater than Satyanarayana Vrata, and Varalakshmi Vrata.
Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji of Avadhoota Datta Peetham, Mysuru, India, has called upon all of us to perform this Vrata this year multiple times, in 2020, to overcome difficulties we may face in our daily life.
In Krita Yuga, Lord Dattatreya, the very first spiritual Guru, initiated emperor Kartaviryarjuna into this Vrata. By performing this, the king became the lord of the entire land mass and attained all the 8 Yoga Siddhis. King Dasaratha, and Lord Rama performed this Vrata in the Treta Yuga. In Dwapara Yuga, Sri Krishna extolled the greatness of this Vrata and taught it to Dharmaraja. Now this forgotten Vrata has been revived by Sri Swamiji for the benefit of mankind in this Kali Yuga.
While it is beneficial to perform this Vrata daily at home, the merit gets multiplied a hundred fold, we are told, if it is performed at a riverside, near a waterfall, by the ocean, on a hilltop, in a Tulasi garden, in a cow shelter, in any of the Jyotirlinga temples, Shaktipeethas, or Mukti kshetras. Hence, this hilltop venue has been chosen.
For this year’s Anagha Vrata Maha Yajna, Sri Swamiji has approved of a shorter and simpler version of the ritual to accommodate everyone. He insists that several million times this ritual has to be performed to ward off calamities on this planet.
