Why it mattered: the engine of the poem is nostos (homecoming) and defending the oikos (household) in a world where Bia (brute force) breaks order.

Cyclops, Sirens, Scylla & Charybdis: Homer isn’t giving clean victories. He’s giving tradeoffs, constraints, and the least ruinous path, the reality of seamanship and command.

The point isn’t that the monsters are “real.”
The point is that the sea was terrifying, humans were unpredictable, and survival demanded rules.
