Clubbing is a clinical feature (physical sign) involving the bulbous enlargement of the distal ends of digits (fingers and/or toes). It is due to the swelling and proliferation of underlying connective tissue, and is ultimately leads to a change in the angulation of the nail resulting in Schamroth’s sign. The exact mechanism as to why this occurs is not entirely known; however, 4 mechanisms have been proposed. There are a variety of associated conditions that may cause clubbing including numerous respiratory and cardiac conditions. In this lesson, we discuss clubbing and physical sign in more detail, along with the 4 proposed mechanisms and a large list of associated conditions.
