The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis for their groundbreaking work: "for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit."
Their Nobel-Winning Work: Quantum on a Large Scale
This incredible research demonstrated that the bizarre, counter-intuitive laws of quantum mechanics are not just confined to the ultra-small world of atoms and subatomic particles, but can be observed and controlled in a system large enough to be held in your hand—a tiny electrical circuit chip!
The laureates used a specialized superconducting electrical circuit called a Josephson junction in a series of highly precise, low-temperature experiments. Their key discoveries were:
Macroscopic Quantum Tunnelling: They showed that charge (in the form of billions of synchronized particles known as Cooper pairs) in their circuit could "tunnel" from one state to another, essentially passing through an energy barrier without having enough classical energy to do so. Critically, this was observed on a macroscopic scale, where the entire circuit acted as a single quantum object.
Energy Quantisation: They proved that the energy levels within their electrical circuit were not continuous but quantised—meaning the system could only absorb or emit energy in discrete, specific packets, just as predicted by quantum theory.
Why This Discovery Matters 🚀
This work is a fundamental leap in physics, effectively bridging the gap between the microscopic quantum world and macroscopic, engineered devices. It laid the essential experimental foundation for superconducting qubit-based quantum computing, which promises to revolutionize computation, cryptography, and sensing technology, tackling problems currently impossible for classical machines. This is truly bringing the quantum age into reality!
