The 161 yard par 3 11th hole at the Old Course at St. Andrews is fittingly known as a "very short par 5." It’s arguably one of the most famous and challenging par 3's in golf. Guarded by bunkers Hill and Strath, the green falls severely towards the front so the ball can easily roll off the putting surface or into the bunkers. Regardless of the pin position, the goal should be to aim between the two large bunkers. Par here is an excellent score.

I hit two different shot types here.

1) A low trajectory, low spin shot. My feel here is to keep my hands quiet and swing with an easy, smooth tempo swing.

2) A high, soft baby cut shot that lands and spills right. Here, my hands feel a little more active. I open the club face about 1 degree and make a fairly aggressive swing.

History note:
The story goes that golfing legend Bobby Jones first played the Old Course in 1921 at the British Open. He hit his ball into the Hill bunker on the left and couldn't get out. Mind you, wedges were not as lofted back in then. Mr. Jones aptly tore up his scorecard and walked off the course. However, six years later, the Open would return to the Old Course. So did Mr. Jones, and the next time, he won the Open tournament.
