Today we will kick off a new series: Ask An Artist! In today’s episode we’ll talk about the use of gel medium in acrylic painting and explain a little bit about what acrylic gel medium can do for your artwork.
A few months ago, we sent out a survey to our facebook followers asking: “What’s a question about acrylic painting which you’d like answered in detail?”
We got some great questions back, and we’ll start by answering:
“How do I get or make the product that is put on the canvas that keeps the paint from drying too quickly and makes the paints blend in?”

To answer this question, we should talk about mediums. Mediums are very useful, as they allow us to alter the properties of acrylic paint.

In acrylic painting, there are gels and mediums which can be stirred/mixed into your paint that will slow them from drying too quickly. Slowing your paint down from drying too fast is an interesting feature of both acrylic and oil painting. This feature could help you blend your paints easier if they take longer to dry. We will explain more about blending paints in a future video in this series.


A medium is something you add to acrylic paint to alter its physical properties. There are mediums which help with acrylic pouring, and those which create a high shine finish to your art. There are even mediums which bulk up your paint and make it a thick paste, as is desirable in impasto painting.

There’s also mediums that will create a matte finish, which creates an entirely different look. Mediums usually come in the form of a see-through gel or liquid. They may be stored in tubes, jars, or jugs.

To use medium properly, be sure to fully incorporate it into your paint. Be sure to choose the correct medium to get the specific effect you’re looking for.
