For the 2026 Commonwealth Games, a significant change has been introduced through the Commonwealth Games Federation's (CGF) new strategic roadmap. Only athletics and swimming will remain compulsory, reducing the number of mandatory sports from 16. This shift is aimed at making the Games more flexible and cost-effective for host nations. As a result, sports like squash, netball, lawn bowls, and others that have traditionally featured are no longer guaranteed a place.

Instead, host cities will have more freedom to choose from a wider pool of sports, including newer disciplines such as e-sports, skateboarding, and surfing, which are growing in popularity. The roadmap also encourages co-hosting and other innovative approaches to reduce costs and ensure sustainability.


For the 2026 Commonwealth Games, five sports are expected to be cut as part of the effort to reduce the overall number of events and lower costs.
