In this Hyfindr Expo Highlights, at the 2024 Hydrogen Technology Expo in Hamburg, Régis Prévost from Teledyne Flame and Gas Detection introduced the Spyglass, an advanced flame detection system tailored for hydrogen safety. Spyglass uses triple infrared (IR) sensors to detect hydrogen flames while distinguishing them from other light sources, such as sunlight, using a specialized algorithm. This multi-sensor setup improves accuracy in identifying flames without false alarms caused by background light.

The device also includes a visual camera, allowing operators to monitor sites in real-time and verify incidents visually, enhancing situational awareness. Spyglass detects hydrogen flames up to 30 meters away within two seconds, making it especially effective in high-risk environments like hydrogen refueling stations. The system also stores data one minute before and three minutes after an event, enabling a thorough analysis of the incident’s cause and effectiveness of mitigation responses.

Compared to older UV-IR flame detectors, Spyglass’s triple-IR technology detects flames 50% farther and twice as fast, offering a significant safety upgrade for hydrogen facilities. By supporting quick, remote decision-making and comprehensive event recording, Spyglass aims to elevate hydrogen safety standards.
