How to Track Changes In Excel Without Sharing The Workbook

So, excel has a built to record changes in a cell value. Its called Track Changes. But in newer versions of excel its hidden. You’ll have to enable it to use it. In the video linked above I’ve presented how you can enable track changes to track historical data in excel.

If you use excel’s built in function you’ll have to share your workbook. Its mandatory. But sometimes we work on important files that can not be shared. This is when excel’s track changes option become obsolete. Now how do you secretly track changes in excel?

There is a way you can you do tracked changes in excel without sharing the file if you use vba. In this tutorial I’m going to show you exactly how you can track changes in excel using vba. Please follow the below procedure.

Step 1: Right Click Sheet tab where you want to check if a cell has changed.
Step 2: Click View Code.
Step 3: Write the code (Please subscribe and here goes the code:   / 36063052  )
Step 4: Change the data range from the code.
Step 5: Close the VBE

Now you can excel track change history of this worksheet. What we have done here is that we used excel vba code to track changes. If we use this macro we’ll not have to share the workbook with anyone. We can see who made changes to this excel document and what and when the changes occurred. Most importantly we’ll be able to track every change. In the excel built function you’ll able to track only 2 changes but here you’ll be tracking every change that ever made. This is how you can automatically track changes in excel worksheet without sharing the workbook.
