Kawayu Onsen, located in Teshikaga Town in eastern Hokkaido near the renowned Akan National Park, is one of the rare strongly acidic sulfur hot springs in Japan. The hot spring water originates from Mount Iō (also known as Mount Sulfur), and is highly acidic with a pH of around 1.4. Its powerful antibacterial properties are believed to help with skin conditions, chronic dermatitis, and gynecological ailments. The onsen area is filled with the distinct scent of sulfur, and the air is thick with geothermal steam—offering a raw yet deeply soothing experience.

Mount Iō, known locally by its Ainu name “Atosanupuri,” meaning “naked mountain,” is an active volcano almost entirely devoid of vegetation. White smoke billows from its surface year-round, and the slopes are coated with vivid yellow sulfur crystals—creating a dramatic and surreal landscape. At the base of the mountain, walking trails and observation decks allow visitors to get up close to the volcanic steam vents and feel the intense energy of the earth. Even today, the mountain remains geologically active, making it a perfect place to witness the raw power of nature and the beauty of volcanic terrain.
