Dozens of French fans of late One Direction star Liam Payne gathered in Paris on Sunday (October 20) to remember the singer who died last week in Argentina.

Payne, who shot to global fame with boy band One Direction, died at age 31 after falling from a third-floor hotel room balcony in Buenos Aires on Wednesday (October 16), triggering tributes from fans around the world.

Gathered in front of a makeshift memorial in the French capital's Tuileries Garden, fans laid flowers and lit candles, many shedding tears.

"I didn't only lose a member of my favourite band, but also someone who is like a big brother, like someone who is an integral part of my family. That's the saddest part of it," French fan Alexandra Veloso Silva said.

Prosecutors in Buenos Aires said on Thursday (October 17) an initial search suggested Payne's fall from the hotel balcony came after substance abuse.

On Sunday, tributes to Payne flowed worldwide, from Asia and Australia to Europe and his home country of the United Kingdom.

"I don't what could have happened, I don't understand why no one was there for him," fan Gabrielle Ilic said. "In any case, we're here today, it's a good thing. I think he would have appreciated it."
