In this short video Swami Mukundananda describes the various scriptures of the Sanatana Dharma, also known as Hinduism, that are collectively known as Vedic Scriptures. Among the Vedic Scriptures, the four Vedas hold the most prominent place as the infallible eternal word of God. All other scriptures hold these Vedas as the foremost authority.

Other than the Vedas, the most prominent among these Vedic scriptures include the hundreds of Upanishads, the two epic poems, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, which are also known as Itihasa, or History. They also include the Shad Darshan, or six schools of Vedic philosophy -- Sankhya, Yoga, Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Mimamsa and Vedanta. Also, included are the hundred Samrities, and thousands of Nibandhs.

The volume of Vedic scriptures is so vast that it would take a person more than 500 years just to read it, let alone comprehend and analyze. Hence, the only way to fully understand the essence of the Vedic philolophy is to learn it from a God-realized saint.

Swamiji also mentions that of all the Vedic scriptures, there are three that one can start with to begin understanding the philosophy. These are the eleven most prominent Upanishads, the Vedanta or Brahma Sutras, and the Bhagavad Gita, which is the most accessible of all.
