Low-e coating edge deletion on insulated glass - what’s the purpose and why do we do it?

Edge deletion is the removal of a narrow portion of coating around the perimeter of the insulated assembly.

Why apply the coating if we are just going to remove a portion of it?
◾️Low-e coatings are made up of silver metallic layers, applied to the glass to enhance thermal performance.
◾️Because of the sensitivity of the material, we must protect it from the elements (moisture) to mitigate premature corrosion.
◾️By removing a narrow strip of coating around the perimeter, we create a substrate to apply/bond a continuous primary/secondary sealant joint.
◾️The quality and continuity of edge deletion can be visually inspected prior to glazing the insulated assemblies.
