How do you know if your outboard stator is bad? You’ll probably just need a multimeter to find out.

In this video from Boats.net, John will show you two outboard stator tests that can give you some clues to the health of your stator. We’ll perform both a static test and a live test with a known outboard stator output value to compare our results against. You’ll need to get these specs for your specific outboard. In both tests, we’re measuring across the three coils that make up the stator, measuring resistance in the static test and AC volts in the live test.

The stator is an essential part of the charging system on your outboard, and understanding the symptoms of an outboard stator failure can help point you in the right direction when it’s time to go to work.
