Created in the 1960s for hydroelectric power generation, it spans approximately 222 square kilometers and is fed by the Wah Umkhrah and Wah Umshyrpi rivers. The lake is a popular destination for water sports like kayaking and boating, attracting numerous tourists annually. However, it faces significant pollution and silting issues due to urban runoff from Shillong, threatening its ecological health and longevity.
