Did you know that the Don Jail has a horrifying history of inhumane conditions and public hangings. Completed in 1864, It is one of the oldest structures that remains intact in the city. The reputation of the Don Jail soured over the years due to overcrowding. Originally constructed to house 276 prisoners, its average prisoner load was actually around 620! It was considered the worst jail in Canada with some inmates calling it "hell on earth." Many people believe the building is haunted by the executed prisoners. There's also a ghost called "Lady of the Don" - a former female inmate who hung herself in the 1890s.
