After beating the game's 8 Mavericks again (as per quota of a Mega Man game at this point), you proceed on through the second half of this final level.

And that's when X encountered him again... his arch-nemesis...
Sigma, for the third time, has risen from the dead!
This time, Sigma was responsible for EVERYTHING! It was HE that tricked the Repliforce into a war with the Maverick Hunters, and used the resulting carnage to his advantage to eventually gain full access to the Final Weapon, with him planning to destroy the Earth with it!
Double was indeed Sigma's double agent! He assigned Double to be a spy disguised a rookie hunter to gather information for him from Hunter HQ. Now, all that was left for Sigma to finish his plan was to blow up the Earth!
Not if Mega Man X can help it, that is!

Sigma's fight this time is split into three phases:
In the first phase, Sigma remains in his grim reaper getup. In this form, he's weak to X's Flame Upper, as its fire will literally burn Sigma's cloak away.
In the second phase, Sigma reveals his full new fourth body, and continues fighting with his Grim Reaper scythe. In this form, he's weak against Lightning Web.

Then... he will go into his third and final and most creepy phase...
But this phase as three forms in and of itself, and they each have their own weaknesses:
Sigma's Gunner Form will try to aim at you with a sniper. His weakpoint is his grinning head, and his weakness is Soul Body.
His Earth Form, where he's a huge and gory (by robot standards) head from the ground, will try to either eat you, blow you away towards spikes, or spit rocks at you. This form is weak against Ground Hunter.
His third form is a trio of Mini Bodies that can work with the first two. Red Body breaths fire, Blue body breathes ice, and Yellow Body shoots lightning. They're all weak against X's Charge Shot, even moreso if you have an Arm Armor.
Lastly, the Gunner and Earth forms each have their own health. You can't beat Sigma until BOTH of these forms are crushed!

After X defeats Sigma for the fourth time, it seemed that time has ran out, as the Final Weapon was about to fire at the Earth, and no one was able to stop it, now...
Sigma was once again destroyed, but knowing his track record, this would surely not be the last X would see of him...

X had to hurry and escape from the Final Weapon, or try to figure out one more deseperate move to stop its fire upon the Earth.
On his way out, he encountered General again, still damaged from their previous fight.
As a final act of repentance for being tricked by Sigma, General offered to use what was left of his body to stop the Final Weapon. He was prepared to die, just as Colonel and the rest of his Repliforce have...

Thanks to General, the Earth was saved, and X fled from the Final Weapon in one piece.
He had to think over the ramifications of his fourth grand mission. Having crossed swords with Colonel, discovering that Double was a spy for Sigma. It disturbed X that there were more and more ways of Reploids turning out to be, or changing into Mavericks over time...
And then that's when X got a call from a fellow Maverick Hunter back at HQ. His greatest ally and his one best friend: Zero.
Putting his thoughts into words, X shared his worry to Zero that he, himself, could eventually become a Maverick, and if that day were to ever come to pass, he wanted Zero to deal with him.
Zero brushed off the idea, and wanted X to just return home and rest, for now. His mission was completed.

Past the Credits, however, this was pushed even further.
X just had to continue wondering if he'll eventually become a Maverick like the ones he's faced in this mission. Truth is, there may be an answer to this sooner than he currently realizes...

Thanks for watching my playthrough of this game.
HOWEVER! I'm not done with this game, yet! This final cutscene was the only time Zero appeared in X's story.
So how about I playthrough this game again as the red, blonde-haired robot, this time? Zero's story is not parallel to X's. Rather, it alters the basic story so that Zero takes priority of contributing into it over X, featuring his own moveset and story beats!
