The lyrics were written by Civilla D. Martin, and put to music by composer Charles H. Gabriel (1905).

Civilla D. Martin says she was inspired by the words of some ailing friends who despite their illness always appeared happy because of their faith.
The wife told her, "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me." This in turn was inspired by Scripture as found in Matthew 10:29-31.

"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows."
