Charles Victor Thompson was born on June 13, 1970, and was sentenced to death for the double murder of his ex-girlfriend, 39-year-old Glenda Dennise Hayslip, and her new boyfriend, 30-year-old Darren Keith Cain, killed on April 30, 1998, in Tomball, a suburb of Houston, Texas. In the early hours of that morning, police were called to Hayslip’s apartment after an argument between Thompson and Cain; officers escorted Thompson off the property, but three hours later he returned, kicked in the door, shot Cain four times, killing him instantly, and then shot Hayslip in the mouth. She was airlifted to the hospital and died a week later.
Thompson was first sentenced to death in April 1999, but the conviction was overturned in 2001 due to the unconstitutional use of an undercover informant. After a new trial in October 2005, he was again sentenced to death.
Days later, he carried out a daring escape from the Harris County Jail by removing his handcuffs, changing clothes, and walking out the front door using a fake ID, becoming the only death row inmate to escape from a U.S. correctional facility in the 21st century. He was recaptured three days later in Shreveport, Louisiana, intoxicated and using a pay phone outside a liquor store after traveling on freight trains and posing as a Hurricane Katrina evacuee.
On the night of January 28, 2026, Charles Victor Thompson was executed by lethal injection at the Huntsville Unit, known as the Walls Unit, at the age of 55, becoming the first person executed in the United States in 2026.
