Scoliosis can affect people of all ages, but is most commonly diagnosed in children. We generally categorize scoliosis in children by age group, with the first being infantile scoliosis. This type is typically diagnosed from birth to about two to three years of age. The most common form of infantile scoliosis is congenital scoliosis, where children are born with the condition due to an abnormal vertebra formed during fetal development.
Next, we have juvenile scoliosis, affecting children between the ages of two to three and ten years old. After this comes adolescent scoliosis, diagnosed in patients around ten years of age, continuing until they reach skeletal maturity, typically between ten and 18 years old.
The most common type of adolescent scoliosis is idiopathic scoliosis, where the cause of the condition is unknown. There is another type, neuromuscular scoliosis, which results from a neuromuscular condition and can affect individuals of any age. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is the most prevalent, especially since it coincides with puberty and rapid growth spurts, which can cause the condition to progress quickly. It’s not unusual for scoliosis curves to change by 20 to 30 degrees in just six to eight weeks. In some cases, curves have progressed by as much as 60 degrees in six months if no treatment is provided.
Scoliosis is a progressive condition, and growth plays a major role in its progression. Every child with continued growth, whether diagnosed with infantile, juvenile, or adolescent scoliosis, is at risk of progression. It’s essential to monitor scoliosis closely during growth spurts, especially before and during puberty. If left unaddressed, even mild curves can worsen rapidly and lead to more severe deformities.
What makes scoliosis even more challenging is that many children do not experience pain and cannot communicate when their curve is worsening. The most common symptom in children is postural changes, such as uneven shoulders, uneven hips, or asymmetrical ribs. These changes can be subtle at first but become more noticeable as the curve increases. Some children may also experience changes in their gait, balance, or coordination.
When scoliosis becomes visible, it can have an emotional impact on children, especially during adolescence when body image is a sensitive issue. Changes in appearance can affect self-esteem, and some children may feel more self-conscious or different from their peers. It's important to address the emotional toll scoliosis can take, as these physical changes can significantly impact a child’s self-image.
As scoliosis progresses, it can also limit physical activity. Children involved in sports may find that their condition affects their ability to participate fully, which can have long-term consequences on their quality of life.
Although scoliosis has no cure, it is crucial to manage the condition early to prevent further progression. Early detection and treatment, especially when the curve is still small, can help avoid invasive surgeries, such as spinal fusion. Non-surgical treatments like chiropractic care, physical therapy, and exercises can help improve spinal health and flexibility, allowing children to live active and healthy lives.
Scoliosis treatment focuses not just on straightening the spine but on improving overall health and well-being. By integrating chiropractic care, physical therapy, exercises, bracing, and rehabilitation, we can manage scoliosis without the need for invasive procedures. Early diagnosis and intervention are key, and parents should be proactive in monitoring their child’s posture and checking for signs of scoliosis. This approach can help prevent unnecessary surgeries and lead to the best possible outcome.
