CSKA Sofia were the most successful football club in Bulgaria, having won 31 Bulgarian First League titles, and having been the only Bulgarian club to reach the semi finals of the European Cup / Champions League.

CSKA began two decades of decline during the 1990s though, culminating in the club's expulsion from Bulgaria's top flight in 2015, and liquidation in 2016.

In the four years since, two clubs - PFC CSKA Sofia and FC CSKA 1948 Sofia have been fighting for the identity, history, and heritage of the original CSKA Sofia.
