Cor de Groot (Amsterdam, 07.07.1914 - Amsterdam, 26.05.1993): Dutch pianist and composer. Went to the conservatory at age 13, became a student of Ulfert Schults (piano) and Sem Dresden (composition and conducting).
1932: took soloist examinations cum laude, played his own first piano concerto.
An international career followed.
1937: placed 5th at the International Pianists Competition in Vienna (Gilels came second).
1938-1946: teacher at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague
1939: tour of the Dutch East Indies, where he gave more than 40 concerts.
During much of the 2nd World War Cor de Groot remained active as a pianist. Initially, after the war, he was sentenced by the Honors Council to 10 years exclusion, but was acquitted on appeal.
A very successful period started with performances all over the world.
1956: member of the jury of the Queen Elizabeth Piano Competition.
1959: injury to right hand. He started to compose more, among other things made many arrangements of classical works for the left hand. Other composers also wrote works for the left hand for him.
1960: He became head of music registration at the Dutch Radio Union (NRU).
A Javanese managed to cure the right hand with pressure point massage, but he remained employed by the NRU, did not want the pressure of the travelling pianist life again. However, he did make many radio and recordings as a pianist. Throughout his career he was a great advocate of Dutch contemporary music. 25 Dutch composers dedicated a total of 45 compositions to him. Also foreign composers wrote works for him.
1988: Cor de Groot recorded all of Chopin's mazurkas on a double CD, recorded in the Haags Gemeentemuseum, on a Pleyel grand piano from 1847 (Vanguard 99058).
As a composer, he was very active: he wrote 3 piano concertos, a clarinet flute and oboe concerto, and much chamber music, among other works.
He died in 1993 at the age of 78.

Eduard Flipse (Wissenkerke, 26.02.1896 - Breda, 11.09.1973), Dutch conductor and composer. Trained by his father, and with Henri Zagwijn (composition). He was second conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra from 1927-1930 and first conductor from 1930 to 1962.

The Burlesque in d for piano and orchestra was composed in 1885-6, when Richard Strauss was 21. The composition was first called Scherzo and dedicated to Hans von Bülow, who was highly critical of the piece. Strauss adapted the composition, called it Burlesque, and dedicated it to Eugen d'Albert, who premiered it in 1890, in the same concert in which Tod und Verklärung was also first performed. It is a joyful, particularly varied piece of music, but Strauss did not give it an opus number.
