Описание к видео At least 10 killed in mass shooting at Sweden adult education center, witness recalls screams.

About 10 people were gunned down Tuesday at an adult education center that offers classes for immigrants in the deadliest mass shooting in Sweden’s history, according to authorities.

The gunman — who has only been identified as a 35-year-old man — took his own life after the massacre, according to Roberto Eid Forest, the police chief in Örebro.

He appeared to open fire with an assault rifle — with a disturbing video capturing people running from a barrage of gunshots, with a woman gasping: “Oh my God!”The tally could only be put at “around 10 people” because the “extent of the incident is so large,” the chief said, saying they were still searching for more bodies — calling it “a nightmare.”

However, none of those shot were children, he said of the attack on a sweeping campus that also houses children’s schools.

The shooter does not appear to have been known to police, according to the chief — who said it has not been deemed terrorism, while cautioning that there is still much unknown. The bloodbath was the deadliest such shooting in the European nation’s history, with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson calling it “a very painful day for all of Sweden.”

“Being confined to a classroom with fear for your own life is a nightmare that no one should have to experience.”

The adult education center is on the outskirts of the city of Orebro, which is located about 125 miles west of Stockholm. The violence broke out Tuesday after many students had gone home following a national exam. Police vehicles and ambulances, lights flashing, blanketed the parking lots and streets around the school as a helicopter buzzed overhead.

Teacher Lena Warenmark told SVT News that there were unusually few students on the campus Tuesday afternoon because many went home after the exam. She also told the broadcaster that she heard probably 10 gunshots.

Students sheltered in nearby buildings. Other parts of the school were evacuated following the shooting, which began at around 12:30 p.m. local time (6:30 a.m ET).

Andreas Sundling, 28, was among those forced to barricade themselves inside the school.“We heard three bangs and loud screams,” he told Expressen newspaper while sheltering in a classroom. “Now we’re sitting here waiting to be evacuated from the school. The information we have received is that we should sit and wait.”

Maria Pegado, a teacher at the school, said shortly after lunch someone opened her classroom door and screamed at them to get out.

“I took all my 15 students out into the hallway and we started running,” Pegado, 54, told Reuters.“I saw people dragging injured out — first one, then another. I realized it was very serious.”

Police said that no officers were injured during the violence.

Sweden has been struggling with a wave of shootings and bombings caused by gang crime — but fatal attacks at schools are rare.
