Aarathi Krishnan specialises in humanitarian futures and strategic foresight, with over 15 years of global experience in humanitarian and development aid – including a decade with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent.

She recently led a global strategic foresight process for the Red Cross Red Crescent movement of 191 countries to design and develop its Global Strategy 2030 and transform the network over the next decade. Now, she supports a range of international humanitarian organisations, including the UN and ICRC, integrating foresight for institutional change.

Defending against Evil in 'Tech for Good'

We are in a liminal space – that space between one form of existence and the next. Our desires, ideas, hopes, and dystopias are imagined in advance, predicted, and laid bare to us before we can even consciously articulate them. And at times, making our decisions for us before we have made it ourselves.

We know by now that our digital futures are not neutral, though we might be attracted to its possibilities. We put our faith in technology to solve and mitigate current complexities and future crises. However, in doing so, we might unintentionally give away the very human nature of understanding and interpreting information that is of value to us – to our communities and those around us — and relegate to the very tools that might be used against those within our social order who don’t wield as much influence or power.

This talk will draw on experiences of humanitarian technology deployment and what ethical governance frames might need to be put in place to minimise harm.
