China floods: Torrential rain causes flooding, landslides in Hunan province; relief work underway

In Hunan province’s Pingjiang County, more than 340,000 residents were evacuated, state broadcaster CCTV and local media reported, after the rain caused the river water level to rise to the highest since 1954. In video aired on Tuesday (July 2), CCTV showed severely flooded urban areas with floodwaters of at least 1 metre in height. Rescuers were seen evacuating people from their balconies and roofs. In one incident, rescuers jumped into waters 1.5 metres high inside a house to save a toddler, CCTV reported.
