The excellent 1996 adaptation of Mrs Radcliffe's quintessential gothic tale is already on the channel - but this more concentrated one-hour adaptation by Hattie Naylor is also great. By narrowing the span of the story a little, Naylor intensifies the sense of threat to the heroine rather than losing it amongst the narrative crenellation. The result is a slightly more unsettling version of the story - less of a romp and more of a psychological thriller...
